The K9 Nose
A dog's sense of smell is estimated to be 10,000 to 100,000 times more sensitive than human’s. While humans have about 6 million scent receptors, dogs have up to 300 million, and the part of their brain dedicated to analyzing smells is 40 times larger. They can detect, track, and differentiate scents at concentrations parts-per-trillion lower than humans.
The Canine Olfactory System has been used for medical detection, Search and Rescue (SAR), conservation efforts, environmental research, pest control, law enforcement and in agriculture.
Researchers continue to come up with new ways for utilizing detection K9s to help society.
Explosive Detection K9s
Military explosive detection dogs (EDDs) have saved thousands of lives, with estimates often ranging from 150 to 200 lives per dog over their service. In the Vietnam War alone, dogs are credited with saving over 10,000 lives, and with over 2,700 active military dogs worldwide, their overall impact is immense.
The United States has a serious shortage of qualified dogs to perform the much-needed role of explosives detection dogs. As the number of terrorist incidents increase, so does the demand for these talented dogs to protect our country. The US Government purchases 80 to 90% of its working dogs from Europe, but there are fewer dogs available from overseas as those countries face their own rising terrorism threats.
We aim to help with this shortage through finding suitable rescue puppies and young adult dogs. We are also proud to be a part of the AKC Patriotic Puppy Program.

Agriculture Detection K9s
These are specially selected dogs that safeguard America’s agricultural and natural resources from harmful pests. These dog teams carry out a range of activities, from inspecting passenger baggage, cargo, and parcels at ports of entry to detecting invasive plant diseases, insects and animals. Together, they help protect America’s food crops, forests, farms, and environment.
These dogs are used by government agencies such as Department of Homeland Security, US Customs and Border Protection, USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services and groups of farmers.
Becoming an agriculture detection canine requires a unique type of dog that can stay focused on their target odor and not be distracted by small animals like gophers and squirrels.. We aim to help address this shortage with the help of our volunteers.
